Life in the Fentanyl Lane

Life in the Fentanyl Lane

Do you like what I did there? #snigger simple things!

It’s true. I gave up trying to fight all the pain naturally. Who am I trying to kid? I can barely get from horizontal to vertical without help in the morning and there I was with all these plans (mostly food related) which were only making my mood a lot worse.

These new pain meds have been interesting, I am feeling relief for the very first time, but I also got a wee glimpse of what cold turkey is like on these things during a perfect storm. Fingers crossed for more relief and less pain please!

I haven’t made a grand attempt at reintroducing the food groups I got rid of because I don’t know the first thing about food or cooking. I do know that dairy, specifically cow’s milk, clogs up my nose & throat with mucus, makes digestion quite interesting as it affects my irritable bowel syndrome & silent reflux fairly equally, then brings out the red in my Psoriasis.

That’s just milk. Gluten, soya, refined sugar, rice & tree nuts all have their own special hell too, but they do tend to have a lot of cross-over and some things have more patience than others, but they all cause horrendous pain regardless of how long the symptoms take to appear.

I only mention this as I’m seeing a Dietetics & Nutrition consultant this week. I’m meant to keep a food diary, but c’mon when do I eat? Even before I left myself with bugger all to munch, I never ate 3 meals a day. I eat an evening meal if I can, sometimes;

  • it’s too late for me to eat by the time I’ve remembered I haven’t.
  • my gag reflex is in overdrive.
  • my throat hurts too much from the stomach acid.
  • I lack energy to chew properly, which increases anxiety around choking.
  • my throat feels blocked.
  • my stomach feels bloated.
  • my mental health is interfering.

I have Psoriasis (auto-immune), Silent Reflux & Fibromyalgia (neurological auto-immune) and some foods and chemicals react badly with my body.

The added effect of Sensory Processing Problems

This was the moment I realised I was doomed to starve if I didn’t involve my GP for help. Ren has tried his very best trying to find me replacements for the food I’ve removed, but I have a huge problem…it all feels very wrong.

Gluten, Dairy & Soya free bread is probably a gift straight from the Norse Gods for most people, but to me it doesn’t feel like bread. It feels alien and my mouth won’t tolerate it. I really wish I was joking, but the Genius bread had to be toasted within an inch of its life before it felt like real toast.

I’m afraid a lot of the pre-packaged free from food has been like this for me. It doesn’t feel right.

Do you have any tips? Suggestions? Food that is naturally free from everything I cannot tolerate? Please leave a note in the comments, it’s not just me you’d be helping 🙂
